- As good as he was,
- Marques never got the
- chance to play in the NBA.
- Before 1950, no big-
- league professional
- basketball team would sign a black player.
- So, African-American players turned to the
- Globetrotters. The Trotters had been started
- in 1927 by a man named Abe Saperstein.
- They were great entertainers, who used
- fancy dribbling, tricky passing, and deadeye
- shooting to delight crowds.
-
- The first time that Globetrotter owner Abe
- Saperstein saw him, Marques was leading
- the Langston University (Oklahoma) team to
- a 74-70 victory over the Globetrotters!
- The Trotters rarely lost. Abe signed
- Marques up.
